Choosing what kind of patio heater best suits is relatively simple and you should not be sidetracked by the issue of whether or not the chosen heater has a glass front or not.

Electric infrared heater technology has changed significantly over the last few years, to the extent that having a glass front to keep out moisture and make the unit waterproof is no longer necessary. We use only systems in which the “boot” where the lamp connects to the unit is itself waterproof and therefore the lamp can be completely open and exposed to whatever the British weather cares to throw at it.

Glass fronted heaters are generally old technology and the majority have been superseded with open fronted alternatives. The glass itself is a hindrance to the short wave infrared heat and cuts down the power by at least 20%, in other words a 1.3kW glass fronted heater is only actually delivering a touch over 1.0kW of heat. With many of the really cheap electric heaters available on the high street, up to 50% of the heat is filtered out.
